At Zoe's, the local diner, everyone knows all about Micki Silva before she even steps through the door. They know she's from Washington, D.C., that she's Charlie's wayward niece. Back at Charlie's house, Micki panics and amost bolts when she realises the responsibilities of caring for her dying uncle. She can't cook, she's uneasy around rich people, and she can't comfort Charlie -but she's the only family member with the time to care for him. It's at Zoe's that she meets Roberta, Charlie's best friend. The two women eye each other, Micki turning on her charm, Roberta remaining aloof and keeping her distance. But that's impossible, as caring for Charlie throws the two women together constantly. Micki breaks down every one of Roberta's defences and the two share a romantic night together. The next morning, Charlie dies. Blaming herself for not being there, Micki pushes Roberta away and hurriedly wraps up his businness affairs so she can leave town. Sorting through Charlie's photographs, Micki realizes that for once in her life she has to make a commitment .
